Abdullah’s Journey with Vermicompost and Sustainable Agriculture as a Lead Farmer

It all began with what seemed like a small, yet it was one laden with the weight of destiny: the day Abdullah was appointed as a lead farmer in the LIFE project. In 2022, a 26-year-old youth from the host community in Telkhola, was selected as a lead farmer. As a representative who received trainings from the LIFE project, he shared what he has learned with nearly 90 members of his community about smart and sustainable farming practices, such as appropriate land preparation for cultivation, and field maintenance for agriculture.

Following the training, his community farmers have begun farming by themselves and now are able to produce large crops. They have sold those crops in the market where they can sell with the highest prices, always ensuring to find the market first to identify the best-selling points.

After mastering crop production techniques, Abdullah received trainings from the LIFE Project on both vermicompost creation and its application. He began making vermicompost, sparking a widespread interest in this organic alternative among his peers. He said, “After I start to make vermicompost, many people showed their interests in in adopting this brand-new method. Now I see that the popularity of vermicompost is increasing day by day over chemical fertilizers.” Moreover, he pioneered the practice of vermicompost techniques and took it upon himself to teach these methods to community members.
Abdullah, recognizing the potential for enhanced prosperity within his community, seeks further assistance. His goal is to empower other farmers in Telkhola to flourish both environmentally and economically, envisioning a future where continued support fosters more success stories like his.
